VR2 Found on Remote Alaskan Island

A VR2 acoustic receiver deployed in October 2007 off the west coast of North America near Oregon broke free from its mooring during a storm and set off on a wild journey. The researcher who owned the receiver assumed the unit was lost for good along with its precious data.

But in October 2009, a family that was beachcombing on a remote Alaskan Island (Sutwick Island) found the nomadic VR2 and contacted VEMCO. We were able to identify the researcher who had originally purchased the receiver and had the unit returned.

Turns out the VR2 logged 6801 detections of 61 different transmitters after the deployment date of October 29, 2007 with the final detection coming on March 11, 2008. The unit's battery finally died on September 9, 2009, almost two years after deployment. Since all data was stored in the VR2's non-volatile memory, it was retrievable and was fully downloaded to PC on October 22, 2009.

Total distance travelled by the VR2 is estimated at 1700 miles or 2735 kilometres!
