Issue 5, October 2007
VEMCO will be exhibiting at the 2nd International Symposium on Tagging and Tracking Marine Fish with Electronic Devices to be held October 8-11, 2007 in San Sebastian, Spain. The meeting will focus on the use of electronic devices to track movements and behaviours of marine fishes, as well as examine present and future challenges and perspectives. This symposium will provide an opportunity for scientists working in the marine environment to review the state of the art of electronic tagging and tracking, to examine the type and quality of information currently obtained and to identify future research challenges and tag developments. VEMCO will also be presenting a VR2 Workshop in the main conference room on Wednesday, October 10th from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, which will run parallel with the poster session (5:30pm-7:30pm). The workshop will focus on the development and popularity of VR2 automated acoustic receiver technology produced by VEMCO. This technology is currently being used by biologists worldwide to assess movement patterns, behavior, and site fidelity of fishes and invertebrates. VEMCO staff will discuss the current limitations and future directions of Passive Acoustic Telemetry Technology, and will also discuss current issues with the technology along with potential solutions. Users are encouraged to help us explore problems regarding deployment methods, experimental design, ID code allocation and the identification of unknown codes, code map useage, data management, handling and analysis. We also welcome discussions on non-VR2 acoustic technology (VRAP, VR100, Active Tracking). To register for this workshop, please email Nancy Edwards at nancy.edwards@amirix.com.
