Employee Profile: Stephanie Smedbol, Telemetry Systems Analyst and Multi-talented Athlete

Stephanie joined VEMCO full-time as a Telemetry Systems Analyst in January 2010. However, Stephanie was no stranger to VEMCO, having completed three co-op work terms in our Customer Support department while studying Electrical Engineering at Dalhousie University. Upon Stephanie's graduation in 2009, VEMCO was quick to secure this bright, personable and versatile individual as a full-time member of the VEMCO team.

Adding to her abilities as an Electrical Engineer, Stephanie also boasts a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from McGill University, class of 1993. During her marine biology career, Stephanie spent 13 years working as a lab technician in marine fish research mostly on techniques for rearing alternate fish species (flounder, haddock, halibut) for aquaculture.

Stephanie's responsibilities at VEMCO during her co-op terms included developing test equipment and contributing to the design of new products. The focus of her current position is working with the Sales Department and customers to design VPS systems; processing/ analyzing VPS data; communicating results to customers and assisting them with their interpretation; and obtaining feedback from customers and seeking ideas for product improvements.

With all of Stephanie's academic and career accomplishments, one would think she hardly has time for anything else. Not so... Stephanie pursues her hobbies on a regular basis, especially those of the athletic kind. One evening per week, Stephanie plays soccer in a women's 7-per side soccer league and participates in VEMCO's weekly yoga class. An avid road cyclist and mountain biker, Stephanie bikes to and from work two to three times per week - though she is quick to point out not in the winter! Stephanie also used to race mountain bikes but these days opts for the hobby route as opposed to the competitive.

Beyond sports, Stephanie is a former volunteer firefighter (careful, we may recruit you for our Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee!) and enjoys playing the piano - a pastime she hopes to revive someday when she replaces the piano she sold to help finance her second degree.

Stephanie and her husband also support Halifax's professional basketball team, the Rainmen, by purchasing ½ season tickets and attending home games to root on the team.
