VEMCO Tags and Receivers used to Track Redfish at Kids Cup Tournament

The 4th Annual WaterLIFE Magazine Kids Cup youth redfish angling catch-and-release tournament was held on April 28, 2007 in Port Charlotte, Florida. What made this year's tournament so unique is that 20 of the fish caught by the kids were implanted with a VEMCO transmitter and released back into Charlotte Harbour.

MOTE Marine Laboratory scientists from Sarasota, Florida were on hand to surgically implant the tranmitters prior to release. These fish were then tracked by VEMCO VR2s set-up underwater by MOTE Marine and Sea Grant along known redfish travel corridors. VEMCO's VR100 mobile acoustic receivers were also used on board boats to track the fish immediately following release.

The project will enable MOTE scientists to learn more about redfish behaviour, movements and habits, providing invaluable information which will be used by fisheries managers to protect and better manage fish stocks for future generations. And since the young anglers (ages 10-16) are the future generation, it is only fitting that they benefit from learning more about redfish behaviour too.
