VR2 automated acoustic receiver technology and associated coded transmitters have significantly increased biologists' understanding of behaviour of marine organisms in the wild. In the five years the technology has been readily available, there has been a dramatic increase in use which has created both opportunities and challenges for all users.

When VEMCO first introduced coded transmitters, 256 unique transmitter IDs were available. As the technology became more popular, this proved to be inadequate so additional coding schemes and standard Code Maps were developed to support a great deal more IDs as well as Sensor Tags.

In our March 2005 Newsletter, we described our Miniature Tag initiative and the planned introduction of a 6 mm diameter transmitter. We now have initial prototypes but have decided to use this season to ensure that all the system components (receivers, hydrophones, processing software, etc.) are in place and evaluated in the field by a number of users before a full roll out. As well, there are some improvements we will be making to improve performance - particularly transmitting life.
