Issue 8, March 2009
VEMCO employees adopted a needy family for Christmas 2008 through our local Salvation Army Adopt-A-Family program. Each October, the local Salvation Army publishes a list of families who require assistance for the holiday season. Companies and individuals respond by "adopting" a family and purchasing or donating gifts, clothing and food to ensure their family's Christmas is a happy and memorable one. We were provided with a description of the family along with a list of needs and "would-like-to-haves" and were also asked to purchase enough grocery store gift certificates to provide the family with ample food for at least a week. Our family was a single mother with four children - three girls ages 12, 8 and 6 and one 11-year old boy. Employees responded in an overwhelming way, buying gifts from the family's wish lists or donating money towards food gift certificates. All extra donations were used to buy any items left on the wish lists not already purchased by staff. Although the Salvation Army required that our family remain anonymous to us, being part of this program still touched a personal chord with everyone involved and we all look forward to participating in the program again next year.
