OTN (www.oceantrackingnetwork.org) The Ocean Tracking Network (OTN), headquartered at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, is a large-scale global initiative that comprehensively monitors ocean conditions and marine life response to these conditions. OTN will use leading-edge "made-in-Canada" technology developed specifically to observe the state of the world’s oceans. VEMCO, a division of AMIRIX Systems Inc., Lotek and Satlantic Inc. are OTN’s main private sector partners.
FADIO (www.fadio.ird.fr) FADIO is a research project funded by the DG Research of the European Union, and is comprised of eight European partners and one American partner. The main objective is to develop new observation instruments to better study the behaviour and abundance of pelagic fish (in particular tuna) around Fish Aggregating Devices (FAD) (www.fadio.ird.fr/fieldreports.htm). Vemco acoustic tags and receivers (www.fadio.ird.fr/tags.htm) are being used to record the swimming depths of different individuals of an aggregation (species, size), and record the time residency of fish around FADs.
POST (www.postcoml.org) The Pacific Ocean Shelf Tracking Project (POST) was created to monitor the movement of marine animals through an array of listening stations set along the west coast of North America. Little is known about key aspects of the biology of threatened and commercially valued species upon which fisheries assessments are critically dependent. POST results will give much needed information about their behaviour and provide unprecedented insight into the mysteries of migration.
The POST project uses advanced acoustic technology from VEMCO to track the movement of individual animals. Tags implanted in the animals’ abdomens send out unique signals, which are picked up by receivers placed on the ocean floor. VEMCO is one of POST's industry partners on technology development.
